Low-Flow Groundwater Sampling

Understanding Low-Flow sampling and its benefits

Groundwater sampling is a fundamental practice for assessing the quality of aquifers, particularly when dealing with contaminated sites or environmentally sensitive areas.

In this context, one of the most effective methods for collecting representative samples is low-flow sampling. Let’s see what it’s all about…

Low-Flow Sampling

This is an advanced technique that involves extracting groundwater, after purging, from a well with a reduced flow rate (typically less than 0.5 L/min).

The goal is to extract water in a way that minimizes stress and lowering of the water level in the system, taking into account, in any case, the overall objectives of the sampling program.

Furthermore, by using a multi-parameter probe, it is possible to monitor the trend of the parameters that indicate the quality of the water (pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, redox potential, and temperature), so that sampling is carried out only when equilibrium conditions are reached.

Why is it important?

Thanks to low-flow sampling, phenomena such as the mixing of surface water or deeper layers that could distort the results are avoided.
This method is essential when it is necessary to:

  • monitor water quality in industrial or agricultural areas.
  • verify contamination by hazardous substances (such as heavy metals or hydrocarbons).
  • carry out environmental checks on land near landfills or abandoned industrial sites.

In short, low-flow groundwater sampling guarantees more accurate and reliable data, allowing informed decisions to be made on remediation interventions, environmental projects, and sustainable water resource management.

New instrumentation

At ABMGeo, we ensure accurate and cutting-edge solutions for the protection of the environment and water resources, thanks to the use of the most innovative techniques.

For this reason, we have recently equipped ourselves with a 12V Proactive Tornado pump, perfect for conducting investigations even in the most remote or difficult-to-access locations.

Furthermore, thanks to its versatility and reliability, it can be used with a flow regulator, ideal for both purging piezometers and precision sampling.

ABMGEO offers you a professional and complete service in all phases, from consulting to implementation.
